Construction Safety Officer

O’Hara Search Group is proud to partner with Bantrel Co. to support the hiring of a Construction Safety Officer to join their Infrastructure team in Toronto, Ontario. We work closely with organizations across engineering, construction, and infrastructure sectors on the delivery of critical hiring needs. This role supports safety assurance and compliance activities on a major transit infrastructure project and will play an important role in helping ensure construction work is carried out safely, in accordance with legislative requirements, contract obligations, and project expectations.


The Role

  • The Construction Safety Officer is responsible for performing construction assurance and compliance activities in support of active project execution. Working closely with project teams, contractors, and integrated stakeholders, this role helps ensure work is planned and carried out safely, with appropriate controls in place to protect workers, the public, infrastructure, and ongoing operations.
  • This position is well suited to someone who is comfortable working closely with construction teams in a fast-paced project environment, providing day-to-day field oversight, supporting safe work procedure implementation, participating in inspections and audits, and helping address safety issues as they arise. The role plays a key part in maintaining compliance, identifying hazards, supporting investigations, and promoting safe and efficient project delivery.


About the Project

  • Bantrel Infrastructure is supporting the Ontario Line Subway Project as a key sub-vendor to Bechtel, which has been appointed as Delivery Partner within an integrated team alongside the customer, Metrolinx. The project includes the design, build, operations, and maintenance of infrastructure and rail systems associated with 15 stations and more than 15 kilometres of new alignment in Toronto, Ontario. Execution involves two key PPP contractors, multiple advanced early works packages, and two large Progressive Design Build contracts, making this a large and complex infrastructure program requiring strong coordination across multiple stakeholders.


Location & Schedule

  • This is a full-time, permanent position based in Toronto, Ontario. The role is aligned to Bantrel’s Infrastructure team and supports active construction work on the Ontario Line project. Eligible employees may also participate in Bantrel’s Earned Day Off program, which provides alternate Fridays off based on the annual calendar, and a hybrid remote work program of up to 52 days per year where eligibility applies.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support project teams in the development and implementation of Safe Work Procedures to help ensure construction activities are planned and executed safely in the field.
  • Perform formal inspections and audits to verify compliance with applicable occupational health and safety legislation, project standards, and contract requirements.
  • Provide day-to-day oversight of on-site construction work conducted by contractors, assessing compliance with relevant OHSA legislation and contractual obligations while supporting the identification of hazards and implementation of risk mitigation controls.
  • Review ongoing site activities and provide support to help protect workers, the public, existing infrastructure, and surrounding operations throughout construction execution.
  • Engage and coordinate with the Integrated Project Team and internal and external stakeholders to provide consistent and continuous safety support across the project.
  • Work collaboratively with project teams to review, analyze, and outline construction activities and work areas to support safe and efficient delivery of the work.
  • Participate in or support incident investigations, including follow-up actions to help ensure identified corrective measures are implemented effectively.
  • Assist the Safety Director and broader Safety team with additional project and departmental responsibilities as required.



Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Candidates should have 5–7 years of experience in construction safety, along with experience supporting railway safety, infrastructure projects, and heavy civil construction environments. Experience working in complex, active project settings where multiple priorities, contractors, and stakeholders must be managed simultaneously will be important for success in this role.

Technical Knowledge

  • The successful candidate will have a strong working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, with a particularly strong understanding of construction-related requirements. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, is also required.

  • The successful candidate will bring the ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities within established timeframes, while maintaining strong attention to detail and sound professional judgment. They will also demonstrate the ability to build collaborative and effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, along with the communication and coordination skills required to support safe execution across a large and integrated infrastructure project environment.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Bantrel offers a competitive compensation package, with a base annual salary range of $100,000 to $125,000 CAD, depending on the successful candidate’s skills, qualifications, and experience.
