Structural Steel Field Specialist

This opportunity supports a multi-billion-dollar potash mine project and offers the chance to work within an integrated engineering and construction team on a complex, high-profile development.


Position Overview

  • The Structural Steel Field Specialist is responsible for supporting field engineering and construction activities related to structural steel installation and erection. This role ensures that all work is executed in accordance with engineering design, project specifications, and quality standards while maintaining alignment with project schedules and safety requirements.
  • Reporting to the Project Field Engineering Manager or Technical Services Manager, the successful candidate will coordinate field engineering efforts, support subcontractor execution, and act as a key interface between engineering, construction, and client stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities

  • Complete all required structural steel inspections for infrastructure within the assigned scope, ensuring compliance with engineering designs, specifications, and applicable codes
  • Review contractor submittals related to structural steel, including project execution plans, quality plans, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), and inspection records
  • Perform field inspections of structural steel construction activities to verify compliance with technical, quality, and safety requirements
  • Identify, document, and issue quality incident reports as required, ensuring proper tracking and resolution
  • Manage discipline-specific field engineering documentation and processes, including Technical Queries (TQs), Field Change Notices (FCNs), Field Change Reports (FCRs), and Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs)
  • Communicate structural design updates and field engineering changes to construction and engineering teams, ensuring accurate and timely implementation
  • Utilize project systems and digital platforms to submit, track, and close out technical queries, field changes, and quality-related documentation
  • Review and verify installed structural quantities to support project progress tracking and reporting
  • Participate in construction walkdowns, inspections, and punch list activities, ensuring deficiencies are identified, tracked, and resolved
  • Review and confirm readiness and completeness of turnover documentation for structural systems
  • Confirm that all required inspection, testing, and maintenance activities for structural components have been completed in accordance with project requirements
  • Participate in site safety programs, required training, and risk management activities, including hazard identification and control verification
  • Prepare reports related to structural engineering deliverables, construction progress, quality status, and turnover readiness
  • Prioritize and manage daily field engineering activities to align with project objectives, timelines, and milestones
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, supporting overall construction execution across engineering, procurement, and commissioning phases
  • Perform additional duties as required to support successful project delivery


Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in structural steel construction within large-scale industrial, mining, or infrastructure projects
  • Strong ability to interpret structural drawings, specifications, and engineering documentation
  • Demonstrated experience with quality management systems, inspections, and construction documentation processes
  • Experience managing contractor submittals and field documentation, including ITPs, NCRs, and field change processes
  • Working knowledge of multi-disciplinary construction environments, including engineering, procurement, commissioning, and project controls
  • Previous experience coordinating subcontractors and supporting field execution activities
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities, including root cause analysis
  • Proficiency with digital construction systems and engineering data platforms is considered an asset

Additional Information

  • This is a site-based role supporting a major industrial construction project in Saskatchewan
  • Camp accommodations are provided; relocation support is not included
  • The position follows a rotational schedule of 14 days on and 7 days off

  • Location: Leroy, Saskatchewan
