Project Engineer - Mining Capital Project

O'Hara search group is pleased to be partnering with our client to hire and experienced Project Engineer based in Saskatchewan.

About the Role

  • We are seeking a Project Engineer to support the delivery of capital projects in a mining and heavy industrial environment in Saskatchewan. This opportunity is best suited to someone who is open to working on project-based site locations as required, while supporting projects through the full lifecycle from early concept development and scope definition through detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover to operations.
  • The Project Engineer will work closely with engineering, construction, project management, maintenance, operations, logistics, vendors, and external consultants to develop practical, safe, and cost-effective solutions that meet both project and operational objectives.
  • This role requires strong technical judgment, disciplined coordination, and the ability to manage technical detail while maintaining focus on schedule, budget, quality, risk, and constructability. It is well suited to candidates with 10–15 years of experience who are looking to take on a broad project engineering role in a mining setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate engineering deliverables across design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and turnover activities.
  • Define engineering scope and support front-end planning activities, including concept development, FEL, and FEED.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to gather technical requirements and translate them into practical, fit-for-purpose project solutions.
  • Coordinate drafting, design, consultants, vendors, and contractors to maintain quality, progress, and alignment with project goals.
  • Support business case development, tendering activities, technical bid reviews, and procurement coordination.
  • Track and manage RFIs, technical reviews, design issues, and engineering changes, including impacts to scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Monitor technical progress, communicate risks and issues, and support project reporting, risk management, and decision documentation.
  • Support construction, commissioning, turnover, and operational acceptance activities to help ensure successful project closeout.
  • Promote safe, compliant, and practical execution while ensuring regulatory, quality, and internal requirements are met.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related discipline.
  • P.Eng. designation or eligibility for registration with APEGS in Saskatchewan.
  • 10–15 years of relevant experience in mining, potash, mineral processing, heavy industrial, or comparable capital project environments.
  • Experience working with EPCM firms, consultants, contractors, and vendors in a project environment.
  • Experience supporting or managing engineering components of capital projects across one or more project phases.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and stakeholder coordination skills.
  • Experience with FEED, front-end development, and technical or project controls tools is an asset.

Why This Role

  • This is an opportunity to work on capital projects that directly support the performance, reliability, and growth of a mining operation in Saskatchewan. The role offers exposure across planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover, making it a strong fit for engineers who want both technical depth and meaningful project delivery responsibility.
  • It is also a strong role for candidates who want to continue building toward larger engineering and construction project leadership responsibilities over time, with direct exposure to technical coordination, construction execution, change management, risk management, and cross-functional stakeholder engagement.

Work Environment

  • This position is based in Saskatchewan and supports work in a mining and heavy industrial project setting. The role combines office-based project coordination with regular engagement in technical, operational, construction, and commissioning activities, and requires a practical, hands-on approach to project delivery.
  • Candidates should be comfortable working in an environment that requires collaboration across multiple teams, a strong commitment to safety, responsiveness to changing priorities, and the ability to support work in project-based field or site conditions as needed.
  • Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
  • Reports to: Senior Engineer, Project Engineering
