O’Hara Search Group is proud to partner with Bantrel Co. to support the hiring of a Deputy Area Field Engineer to join their Mining team in Leroy, Saskatchewan. We work closely with organizations across engineering, construction, and infrastructure sectors on the delivery of critical hiring needs. This role sits within a major potash development project and will play an important part in supporting field engineering leadership, technical execution, and construction quality across a designated area of the project.


The Role

  • The Deputy Area Field Engineer provides technical support to superintendents, directs assigned personnel in meeting cost and schedule requirements, and helps verify that permanent plant materials, equipment, and workmanship are delivered in accordance with design requirements. The role leads construction engineers across a broad range of field engineering activities, typically within a defined engineering discipline or project area.
  • This position is well suited to someone who is comfortable leading field engineering teams in an active construction environment, coordinating across engineering, construction, and contract administration functions, and maintaining visibility over installation quality, documentation, and execution readiness.


About the Project

  • Bantrel is part of the Hatch Bantrel Joint Venture (HBJV), which is executing engineering and construction on the BHP Jansen Potash Mine Project in Saskatchewan. Following completion of the Definition Phase Study, the project is now in the Detailed Engineering Phase for the Processing, Non-Process Infrastructure, and Mining Areas of the 4.5 Mtpa Stage 1 Potash Mine. With a published total installed cost of approximately US $5.3 to $5.7 billion, the project represents one of the largest private investments in Canada and is being delivered using a combination of proven project execution tools and new technologies.


Location & Schedule

  • This is a camp-based position located in Leroy, Saskatchewan, operating on a 14 days on / 7 days off rotation. The role is being offered as a full-time permanent opportunity, and it is not eligible for a relocation subsidy or living out allowance.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the activities of assigned field engineers, specialists, and other personnel within the designated project area.
  • Direct the preparation of quantity listings for field-purchased materials and equipment and initiate requisitions for field purchases as required.
  • Help ensure the quality of permanent plant installations is in accordance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and design requirements.
  • Supervise the preparation of field engineering documents and oversee the design of temporary construction facilities, including the preparation of as-built drawings.
  • Support field engineers, planners, and superintendents in interpreting design drawings, monitoring equipment installation, planning for delivery of permanent plant materials and equipment, and confirming that warehousing and storage arrangements adequately protect materials and equipment.
  • Review specifications, purchase orders, subcontracts, inspection reports, delivery schedules, instruction manuals, and technical data to support field execution and provide technical guidance on site.
  • Administer field technical service contracts, manage subcontract changes, and coordinate with client personnel and the Project Field Engineering Manager on matters affecting contract administration.
  • Participate in major contractual discussions and negotiations alongside contract administrators, where required.
  • Review or supervise the preparation of construction quantity estimates and cost engineering studies, and support reviews of schedules and budgets.
  • Analyze assigned field engineering activities to determine scope, time, and manpower requirements.
  • Verify that vendor bids for materials and equipment meet specification requirements and administer field execution of purchase order requirements.
  • Provide technical support for turnover and pre-commissioning activities and help ensure project information systems, including the CDM database, are updated on a regular basis.
  • Verify installed quantities, conduct personnel evaluations for assigned team members, and support progressive training to build capability and readiness for increased responsibility.
  • Ensure quality requirements across the assigned area remain in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications.



Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Candidates should have a recognized degree in Engineering or a related scientific discipline, a discipline-specific diploma from an accredited technical college, and/or completion of specialized courses in Construction Management. Relevant field experience as a Field Engineer, Field Specialist, or Assistant Superintendent with a strong understanding of engineering principles, cost control, and scheduling will also be considered important for success in this role.

Technical Knowledge

  • The successful candidate will bring a strong foundation in a specialized engineering discipline, along with working knowledge of cost control, scheduling, and contract administration within heavy industrial or commercial construction environments. Experience supporting field engineering execution, quality oversight, temporary facilities, quantity tracking, and technical coordination in large capital project settings will be important in this position.
